With recent rumors of Xbox first-party titles like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves having PlayStation launches, Xbox head Phil Spencer has tweeted about a ‘business update event’ scheduled next week where they will share their “vision for the future of Xbox”.
The rumors of Xbox titles launching on rival Sony’s console came from several credible industry insiders in the last week. While Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves were more emphasized, the rumors also pointed at PS launches of more recent big-budget Xbox first-party games like Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Without a surprise, this caused an outcry among Xbox users as many bought Microsoft’s console to be able to play those games.
There have also been rumblings about Xbox focusing on its subscription service and moving away from the hardware itself. Although it is too early to conclude any of it, Spencer’s tweet certainly makes me think that it lies within the realm of possibilities.
The barrage of replies under Spencer’s tweet, however, unequivocally expresses the concern that Xbox going multi-platform (releasing first-party games on Sony’s platform) will mean the lack of any competition in the home console space. Whatever the case, we will hopefully have a clearer understanding of Xbox’s direction through their ‘business update event’ next week.
