Dead Cells, the smash hit indie roguelike, will be having its last update, Update 35 “The End is Near” later this year, as studio Evil Empire moves to future projects.
While Motion Twin developed Dead Cells and its first DLC Rise of the Giant in 2019, they handed the reins to Evil Empire for all the subsequent DLCs. Evil Empire were behind The Bad Seed, Fatal Falls, the Queen and the Sea, and Return to Castlevania DLCs all released from 2020-2023.
Everything combined, Dead Cells has had close to seven years of continuous support in terms of free content updates and paid DLCs since its early access release in May 2017. The game left early access in 2018. So even leaving aside that one year, the roguelike gem has had six years of support, which is commendable to say the least.
As for Evil Empire, they are moving into future projects which are not officially announced yet. In 2023, we heard the studio working on rebooting two retro IPs (thanks to GamesIndustry.biz). Motion Twin, on the other hand, is working on Windblown which is slated for its early access launch sometime this year.
