Age of Mythology Retold, the remake of the classic 2002 Age of Empires spin-off, will launch on Xbox and PC later this year.

The release window was revealed along with a showcase of some of the Greek in-game units like Medusa, Pegasus, and Cerberus. World’s Edge art director Melinda Rose showed the remade models in Augmented Reality. However, that’s not all. Age of Mythology: Retold goes beyond upgrading assets of the 2002 RTS and it is poised to overhaul parts of the gameplay of the classic.

Unlike the Definite Editions of the Age of Empires trilogy, Age of Mythology Retold builds almost everything from the ground up. Rose says,

“We’re not only upgrading the engine and bringing all of those quality-of-life improvements that you’ve come to expect from World’s Edge, but in addition to that we’re doing even more to update the art. That means all new 3D models, all new animations, textures, UI, VFX the whole shebang.”

According to what the game’s producer Earnest Yuen told PCGamer, Retold will add ray tracing, increase the population limit, and add an engine to handle special effects. The population limit increase will surely change how Retold’s gameplay will play out as compared to the original since many strategies of the game were predicated upon the unit limits.

You’ll also have the ability to micro your unit powers in Retold. That will also likely play a huge part in increasing the skill ceiling of the game. God Powers are also not a one-off thing in Retold, rather they will have a cooldown, which opens many new gameplay opportunities.

Age of Mythology Retold currently has its Steam Page up, and you can wishlist it there. It will also be available on PC and Xbox Game Pass as a day-one title.
