Spec Ops: The Line was suddenly delisted from PC digital storefronts like Steam and Fanatical yesterday. Confirming most fans’ speculations, a 2K representative has confirmed today to PCGamer that this is due to the expiry of several partnership licenses.

The highly regarded 2012 shooter, developed by Yager and published by 2K, is still talked about today, sheerly because of its subversive narrative—focusing on the profiteering military-industrial complex and the trauma inflicted by a war on soldiers and civilians alike.

The sudden delisting caught everyone by surprise, including the game’s designer and director Cory David.

Now with the 2K representative’s clarification, we at least know why that’s the case. However, that does not take away from the tragedy that this unique game will not be easily buyable anymore. For the time being, the game can still be purchased on Xbox, GOG, and third-party key sellers. But I presume this won’t be for long. This news has once again brought forward the discussion on how crucial preservation is for the video game industry.
