With Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree’s gameplay reveal and release date announcement today, it seems that’s the end of the road for FromSoftware’s 2022 open-world Soulslike, at least for the time being. In an interview with IGN Japan, FromSoftware president and Elden Ring game director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that there are no plans for another DLC or a sequel for Elden Ring.
Shadow of the Erdtree is slated for release on June 21, 2024. It is promised to be FromSoftware’s “largest expansion” ever, coming after two years and four months of Elden Ring’s launch. “I think this DLC will be a big break, even if it’s not a complete end,” Miyazaki says, “There is no such thing as an additional DLC or [Elden Ring 2] at this time.”
To look back on FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games, Sekiro had no DLCs, and Dark Souls 3 had two— Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City. Going even further back, Bloodborne had one DLC and Dark Souls 2 had three. So, clearly, there’s no set pattern for the amount of downloadable content FromSoftware makes for their games.
Shadow of the Erdtree may very well be the only expansion Elden Ring gets before FromSoftware moves to their next project. However, judging by the promised scale of the expansion, it seems Elden Ring fans will have something to chew on for a long while.
