Gacha games never shy away from using the enticement of chance and Honkai Star Rail is certainly no exception. While pulling 4-Star and 5-Star is always a rare milestone in the game, there is a pity system that creates a certain fairness in this gamble.

The system mostly works in the favor of long-term players. There is, however, a 50-50 count that adds challenge to this system. Let’s understand this in detail.

Pity System in Honkai Star Rail

Honkai Star Rail’s pity system mechanic ensures each player can pull featured 4-Star and 5-Star drops. Despite the base pull rate for various 5-star warps ranging between 0.6% to 0.8%, a Soft Pity is speculated to add on with each pull. This feature is believed to increase the pull rate of the character/item with each pull. And when the Soft Pity reaches 100, a 5-star/4-star drop is believed to be received.

Hard Pity on the contrary is an officially established concept in HSR. This can be accessed by clicking on the View Details button on the distinct banner. This will produce the details of all the pulls you have made so far. You will still need to do the math manually.

Pity System for 5-Star Banners

The Pull Rate data in the analysis table below is based on the official data provided by HSR. This might make you think the probability of getting 5-star drops is very low. Before you let that thought sink in, pay attention to the Pulls Required. This data is based on the players’ experience as shared on various platforms such as Reddit and Star Rail Station.

This very deflection from the Pull Rate gave birth to the concept of Soft Pity.

BannerPulls RequiredPull Rate
Character Event Warp90 0.6%
Light Cone Event Warp80 0.8%
Regular Warp90 0.6%
Starter Warp50 0.6%

Pity System for 4-Star Banners

Just like 5-Star Banners, the pity analysis table for 4 Star characters and items is presented below:

BannerPulls RequiredPull Rate
Character Event Warp10 5.1%
Light Cone Event Warp106.6%
Regular Warp105.1%
Starter Warp105.1%

Naturally, due to lower rarity, 4-Star Banner characters and items are relatively easier to come by.

While there is a fair chance to claim a featured Character/Light Cone when the Soft Pity has peaked, there is another factor that might delay the reward. For Character Event Warps, there is a 50% chance to get a featured character. However, in case the God of Luck isn’t on your side, you will receive a featured character on the next cycle.

Similarly, there is a success rate of 75% when it comes to Light Cone banners.

Note: Once you receive the 4-Star/5-Star character, the pity cycle is believed to be reset.

When it comes to limited-period characters, the pull rate is generally lower. Here are the pull rates of some of the latest Character Banners based on the Pity System we explained above:

This sums up the basic functioning of the Pity System in Honkai Star Rail. While this information is applicable in most of the cases, there have been exceptions. Players were able to draw many more 5-star Characters in fewer pulls than what the system suggests. And so, it is up to you whether you wish to believe in the Pity System.
