Surprisingly, fans look to be enjoying playing the GTA trilogy Definitive Edition on the phones much, much more than on consoles. The console launch of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, which make up the GTA Definitive Edition was taken apart by fans when it was launched back in Nov 2021 – it sits uncomfortably with a mixed or average critic rating on Metacritic, and an overwhelming dislike on user ratings there. At the time of the launch, the character model overhaul, weather effects and game crashing bugs were particularly pointed out as pain areas.

Cut now to when Netflix announced the trilogy to be playable on all Android / IOS devices as part of it’s subscription in Nov this year – it hardly generated any excitement. Maybe the fans were wary of their past experience with this when they attempted to play on consoles – and hence when the trailer, and later on the game got actually released on mobile, they were pleasantly surprised to see not just a much better version of the game, but also with the ‘classic lighting mode’ bringing back the original sky in the games and similar other improvements detailed out by Rockstar Games in this blog. Fans on GTA forums and in this article on Kotaku are pointing out specific improvements and the difference in performance of the mobile version vs the PC / console version

Currently there don’t seem to be any plans to improve upon the PC and console versions – as their entire energies would probably be devoted into getting GTA 6 out – the trailer for which set an all time record for the highest views in the first 24 hours at a staggering 93 million views.
